This is another conversation sprung from UAF’s Summer Sessions‘ Tall Timbers series that saluted individuals who’ve made a difference in our community. Mary Shields was a natural for the list. She was the first woman to finish the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. She’s also penned books for adults and kids and served as an ambassador of sorts to thousands of visitors to our state.
My friend Donna and I got to visit Mary at her home outside of Fairbanks in May 2023. We were guided their by Capitan Dave. We throughly enjoyed meeting this fine Lady and her two Dogs Smokey and Chuncky Monkey.
She gave us a DVD and a copy of her book Sled Dog Trails. I am nearly finished with her book and have enjoyed the read as well as her many accomplishments. We still need a DVD player to watch her movie but will get that soon.
